Yoga originated in ancient India about five thousand years ago, and is part of the great ocean of Indian knowledge. This was aimed at obtaining permanent peace of mind. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice. Yoga is harmonizing the body with the mind and breath through various postures and breathing techniques.
What is Yoga?
The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Indian language (Sanskrit), the literal meaning of which is union: that is, ultimate union with the divine. Bible says: “Be still and know that I am God”. In these few words we can get to know the science of yoga. Human mind is full of thoughts and distractions, and as such mind is never in a state of quietude. This turbulence of thoughts and restlessness of body prevents us from knowing what we really are. Yoga helps us to still our minds and calm the body. This helps us to know who or what we really are. This self knowledge or self discovery leads us to the knowledge of the divine.Normally our energies are directed outwards, i.e. towards the things of this world, which we perceive through our senses. Senses can capture only physical data which is deceptive in the sense that this does not lead us to any subtle or deeper level of awareness as to who or what we are.
